Dr. Ian Walton
Mathematics Faculty Emeritus
Ian Walton retired in 2011 after 33 years full-time teaching mathematics at Mission College in Santa Clara, CA. He received the system Hayward Award for Excellence in Education in 2011, the Vasconcellos Advocate Award in 2007 and the CCC Technology Leadership Award in 2006. He currently works on a variety of state and national projects including many accreditation team visits, and the first ever Aspen Prize for community colleges. He was elected as a public Commissioner of ACCJC in July 2013.
Ian grew up in Scotland and has a bachelor's degree in Pure Mathematics from the University of St. Andrews. He came to California as a Fulbright scholar in 1973 and has a Ph.D. in Differential Equations from University of California at Santa Cruz.
Ian served college leadership roles as division chair and in his local union and academic senate. He also served ten years on the Executive Committee of the statewide Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) and was President for 2005 – 07. Particular issues of significance during his term included the graduation competencies in math and English and initiating the system Basic Skills Initiative.
In his spare time he sings depressing Celtic ballads and leads sea kayak trips to Alaska for the national Sierra Club.
