AT CUYAMACA COLLEGE
 1. The
GENERAL CATALOG
is
the College's primary
reference
book for degree requirements, course
offerings, tuition costs, the academic calendar, important deadlines,
faculty listings, and Cuyamaca College rules and regulations.
 2. The
CLASS SCHEDULE
specifies which courses are offered each semester. It also includes
academic policies and procedures, testing schedules, updated tuition
information, how to drop and add classes, and specific registration
procedures. The CLASS SCHEDULE is also available at the Cuyamaca College
Cashiers' window, Admissions & Records Office, the College Bookstore and
the Counseling Center.
FEE PAYMENTS
It is Cuyamaca College policy that tuition and registration fees be paid
within three business days after registration of classes. All tuition
must be paid by cash, check, credit card, or money order.

CLASS SELECTION AND REGISTRATION
ESL CLASSES
You are now ready to register for classes
based upon your English test results. The English As a Second Language
(ESL) department offers you four (4) levels of ESL that include writing,
reading, speaking, listening and vocabulary development. Using the
Class Schedule, select your level and should choose from the following
classes:
ESL LEVEL I
ESL 096, English as a Second Language
I
5 units
First course in the study of English reading, writing and grammar.
ESL 097, Listening and Speaking I
3 units
First course in the study of English listening and speaking skills.
ESL 098, ESL Reading and Vocabulary
Development I
3
units
Beginning level course designed to extend ESL students’ vocabulary and
reading ability.
ESL 099A, ESL for the Workplace
3 units
First course in the study of English for the workplace using English in
business situations.
ESL LEVEL II
ESL 100, English as a Second Language
II
5 units
Second core course in the study of English reading writing and grammar.
Includes intermediate reading, paragraph writing, grammar and sentence
structure.
ESL 101, Listening and Speaking
II
3 units
Second course in the study of English listening and speaking skills.
Includes intermediate listening comprehension practice as well as
discussion and presentation skills in spoken English.
ESL 102, ESL Reading and Vocabulary
Development
3 units
Intermediate level course designed to extend the range of ESL students’
vocabulary and reading ability. Focuses on improving reading skills and
strategies as well as understanding and use of academic vocabulary.
ESL 099B, ESL for the Workplace
II
3 units
ESL LEVEL III
ESL 103, English as a Second Language
III
5 units
Third core course in the study of English reading, writing and grammar.
Includes high-intermediate reading, paragraph and short essay writing,
grammar and sentence structure.
ESL 104, Listening and Speaking
III
3 units
Third course in the study of English listening and speaking skills.
Further develops intermediate listening comprehension practice as well
as discussion and presentation skills in spoken English. Practice
academic skills such as close reading and listening, note-taking,
analyzing and classifying, using outside resources and problem solving.
ESL 105, Reading and Vocabulary
Development III
3 units
Third and final course designed to extend ESL students’ academic
vocabulary and ability to read college-level texts at the advanced
level. Focuses on improving reading skills and strategies as well as
understanding and use of academic vocabulary.
ESL LEVEL IV
ESL 106, English as a Second Language
IV
5 units
Fourth core course in the study of English reading, writing and
grammar. Includes advanced reading, paragraph and essay writing,
grammar and sentence structure.
Once you have completed the fourth level of
ESL, (ESL 106), you are eligible to take regular English courses.

ENGLISH CLASSES
ENGLISH 109, Composition for College
Student will practice
the writing process by composing sentences, paragraphs, essays with emphasis
on correct and effective expression through the study of appropriate
language; grammar, punctuation, and usage; and structural writing skills. Readings will be studied to stimulate clarity of thought
and written expression. Students will practice the reading process by
previewing, annotating, and analyzing readings and completing in-class
writing based upon them. By the end of the course, students will be able to
write a largely error-free researched essay by using and acknowledging at
least three sources. Not open to students with credit in ENGL-110;
Non-degree applicable.
ENGLISH 120, College Composition and
Reading
Students will study
the elements and principles of composition through the practice of writing
narrative and expository essays and a research paper. Utilizing word
processing in the computer lab, revision is stressed as a means of achieving
effective skills in writing. Assigned readings stimulate critical thinking
and effective writing. This course fully transferable to any four-year
college or university and is required for transfer.
MATHEMATICS
You may also register for a math course based
upon your math placement test. In addition, your college major may dictate
which math courses you choose. Please consult with a counselor regarding
math courses that are required in your major.
If your goal is to graduate from Cuyamaca
College with an Associate Degree, (and then return home without transferring
to a university), you must meet the minimum level of math to graduate which
is intermediate algebra. You may either test out of the requirement, or
take Math 103, or Math 110.
