Semester Certification

Certification for VA Education benefits is not automatic. Semester intent forms for veterans utilizing VA benefits will not be accepted without a one semester educational plan signed by a counselor.  In order to guarantee timely processing of your military educational benefits you must:

  1. Complete a one semester plan with a counselor during the designated veteran advising hours
  2. Complete your intent form
  3. Register for the recommended classes listed on your semester plan on your assigned day/time of registration
  4. Submit your intent form and one semester plan to the Veteran Services Office after you have registered

Remedial Courses

Remedial and deficiency courses offered as independent study (online) cannot be approved and cannot be certified to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Remedial and deficiency courses are courses designed to correct deficiencies in basic mathematics, English, and reading at the elementary or secondary level. These courses can be certified as part of an approved program, but only for students for whom a verifiable need has been established through assessment AND are taking the course residentially (on campus).

Advanced Payment

Returning students who have been out of school for over 30 days and new students may choose to receive Advanced Payment. This must be done no later than 30 days prior to the beginning of the semester. Check with Debbie Ayers for requirements, and dates in which to apply for Advance Pay.

Concurrent Enrollment

While receiving VA Educational benefits, students may be concurrently enrolled at more than one school during the same semester. Whichever school the student is pursuing a degree from will be the Parent School. Veteran students must pick up a Veterans Affairs Parent School Letter from Debbie Ayers, or an authorization letter from the advisor at the student's Parent School. This form states that the courses taken at the Supplemental School will be credited toward the current major the student is pursuing. Veteran students are responsible for informing the Supplemental School's Veterans' Office where their Parent School is located. The Supplemental School will complete the certification for the benefits form (VA form 22-1999) and send it to the Parent School.

Monthly Verification

Veteran students who receive benefits under Chapter 30, 34 and 1606 GI Bill, have to verify their enrollment each month. These students will receive an award letter from the VA Regional Processing Center in Muskogee, OK. Once this is received, the student can self certify. To insure prompt payment of benefits please self certify every month. The earliest this can be done is the last day of the month. Monthly verification ( self certification ) can be done via one of the following two ways:

Failure to self-certify will cause your benefits to stop. You must do this every month or you will not get paid!

Federal holidays may delay receipt of the Student Verification of Enrollment and/or your check.

Direct Deposit

Direct deposit of VA educational benefits payment is now available for Chapter 30 recipients. This program speeds up education and work study payments. It also decreases chance of missing, lost, or stolen checks. As easy as 1-2-3, Chapter 30 students may request direct deposit through the VA by calling the VA at:

The VA will require students to provide their VA file number, bank routing number, and checking/savings account number.

Tutorial Assistance

Students may qualify to receive assistance from the VA for individual tutoring. To qualify, they must be enrolled in 1/2 time or better and have a deficiency in a subject which they are currently drawing VA educational benefits for.

If eligible for tutoring benefits under a GI Bill students may receive up to $1200 maximum for tutoring. For further information and to apply for VA tutorial assistance, contact Debbie Ayers.

VA Work Study Program

Cuyamaca College Veteran Services is currently accepting V.A. work study applications.  Please contact Debbie Ayers at (619) 660-4276 or via e-mail at Debbie Ayers.

This is a tax-free employment program through the VA. The hourly rate is the Federal or State minimum wage, whichever is greater. Veteran students must be enrolled in and receiving educational benefits at least 3/4 time (9, 10, 11 credit hours) rate.

Benefit Rates of Pay

Rates depend upon amount contributed and/or length of time in service (Number of months of contribution), as well as enrollment status. Inquire at the Admissions and Records Office for current pay rates for each particular GI Bill.

Standards for Receiving Educational Benefits

In compliance with the Department of Veteran Benefits, Circular 22-80-38, the college has developed standards of progress. Each veteran student must conform to these standards to be eligible of VA Educational Benefit Certification. Each veteran student must read, sign, and return the original copy of the Cuyamaca College Veterans Checklist to Debbie Ayers when applying for benefits and upon changing their major.

Benefits Checklist

The following is designed to assist students in getting started at Cuyamaca College and initiating educational benefits:
  • Submit an application for admissions to Cuyamaca College.
  • Request official transcripts from all previously attended colleges, universities, and training institutes be sent to the Cuyamaca College Admissions and Records Office.
  • Obtain a Veterans' Information Packet from the Cuyamaca College Veterans' area in the Admissions and Records Office.
  • Obtain a Cuyamaca College class schedule to determine class listings and availability.
  • Schedule an appointment with a Cuyamaca College counselor to formulate an education plan.
  • Submit the Veterans' Information Packet and a copy of all DD 214s to the Cuyamaca College Veterans' area in the Admissions and Records Office.
  • Visit the Veterans' area EACH semester to complete a Veteran Intent form in order to continue receipt of VA benefits.
