Course Description
ES 012 is a Fitness Center course designed to provide instruction that will help increase your basic understanding of muscular anatomy and kinesiology. You will apply that growing knowledge to gaining muscular strength using resistance training with the goal of improving sports-specific strength. The format of this course is open entry/exit with credit toward completion tracked by computer between the time you log-in and log-out. An individualized program can be prescribed utilizing the student’s personal fitness goals.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Describe how the principles learned through the assignments in ES 012 can be applied to improving muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility; three of the five basic components of fitness.
2. Evaluate parameters of fitness in order to identify personal areas of strength and weakness and how those areas relate to population norms for the purpose of developing a personal exercise prescription.
3. Demonstrate proper use of resistance training equipment and correct exercise technique.
4. State personal and realistic cardiovascular and muscular endurance goals based on the objective test measures in the Fitness Center.
Course Policies
Attendance/Hours
Since ES012 is an open entry/open exit course, you are free to schedule your time in the Fitness Center in any way that fits into the days/times that the Fitness Center is open. It is strongly recommended that you manage your time so that you can split your weekly Fitness Center visits into three visits or more per week.
**Note** : All students are limited to logging no more than 2 hours in the Fitness Center per day.
ALL STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING ALL FITNESS CENTER POLICIES. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU PICK UP THE “FITNESS CENTER POLICIES” HANDOUT FROM THE FITNESS CENTER.*
Course Grading
This course is graded Pass (P) or No Pass (NP). Receiving credit for this course will be based on completion of the following course requirements:
ž Completion of Orientation (first-time students only - 1 hour of credit awarded).
ž 48 Fitness Center lab work hours if enrolled in 1.0 units. (50% of grade)
ž 24 Fitness Center lab work hours if enrolled in 0.5 units. (50 % of grade)
ž Maintain Hypertrophy Log throughout the semester (25% of grade)
ž Complete the Written Assignment. (See description below) (25% of grade)
Written Assignment
In order to receive credit in the class each student must read and study a sports conditioning article, (available in Fitness Center), in preparation for a 10 question quiz that can be taken TBA. Students will come to the Fitness Center during that time, pick up a quiz at the front desk, and complete the quiz in the Fitness Center. Students may use their article during the quiz. This is an individual assignment. Cheating, or “Group Effort” is not allowed, and will result in an automatic No Pass for the course.
Exercise Log
Each student will maintain a Hypertrophy Log for the length of the semester. On this log you will be choosing 5 or more exercises that will help you reach a specific goal for the semester. This goal should be in the area of Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, or Flexibility. Hypertrophy Log should be turned in by 12/11/09.
Academic Misconduct
Students are expected to do their own original work within the confines of the course objectives and evaluation procedures. Any deviation from these expectations is considered a violation of the Academic Policies at Cuyamaca College. It is your responsibility to read and make sure you understand these policies; in particular, the sections entitled “Academic Honesty” and “Academic Honest/Dishonest Policies” in the Cuyamaca College Catalog.
Note: The instructor reserves the right to alter or change this at her discretion. I will make every attempt to notify the class in advance of any proposed changes.
