Behavior Management Plan and Presentation                                                                           Fall 2013                                                                                        back to CD 210-Davies

1. Create a child with a challenging behavior you wish to modify using a most challenging behavior descriptions and case studies from class. Describe the child, his/her age and behavior scenario in detail. Include the appropriate developmental milestones typical for the child's age (3 pts.)

2. Highlight the ways you will incorporate the strategies identified in class for working with children with challenging behaviors: (7 pts.)

See behavior as communication: What is the child's behavior telling you about him or her? What needs are being revealed? (Attention, lonely, angry, hungry, tired etc.) Provide an example. Who owns the problem? Is this one of your hot buttons? How is your behavior/attitude a factor? Is there another staff member in the classroom whose behavior is a factor? How?

Temperament: what is this child's temperament in your opinion? What is the child's predominant multiple intelligence? Provide an example to support your determination of each. How is the child's temperament a factor in his/her behavior? What is the goodness-of-fit between the child and caregiver(s) in the class? Provide an example.

Environment: Consider the arrangement, breadth and depth of activities, of children, of space, of choices, of small play group and individual patterns, of physical and sensory components (too stimulating, lack of materials, open space too big, nothing cozy or comfortable).
Provide examples.

Relationships: Who is the child attached to? How is trust being fostered (developed) and supported (maintained)? Provide an example of each.

Identify the Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence using observation. Note the antecedents: events that take place right before the challenging behavior occurs. What event seems to trigger the behavior? (Transitions? Interruptions? Being left alone?)

Observe objectively. How will you use or modify the schedule not enough free choice, teacher-directed or child-directed activities?), (no consistency in routines, too flexible - nothing they can count on),rituals (sing the same transition song, rub back etc.), as well as consistency and predictability of staff (all teachers act in agreement)?

Identify the natural consequences (inherent) with each of your choices. Identify, describe and provide information for a training resource supporting teacher success. normal".

Design a specific plan for managing this challenging behavior. (Pg. 208-215) The behavior management plan must be submitted as a hard copy in class and also on SafeAssign on or before Nov. 7, 2013.
Share your behavior plan with the class as an entire group using effective visual aids or media. Provide a one page summary of the challenge, the plan and resource for each persons resource file.
