Everyone loves gems! Whether for their monetary value or personal adornment. Explore the geological history of San Diego County and current mining activities. Learn tor recognize, identify and evaluate gems and minerals. Each class explores a different family of gems available in our backyard!

*Students are encouraged to participate in weekend day trips to truly appreciate this class. Students will be responsible for transportation and entrance fee costs. We will search for Quartz in Boulevard, Garnets in the Ramona Mine, Petrified Wood and Fossils in Coyote Wells, and Beryl in the Chihuahua Valley's Blue Lady Mine.

Lapidary Techniques for Gemstones
A month long tumbling project is anticipated using an assorted selection of Gem material for timely evaluation of the polishing process and with distribution of the final product made to members of the class.

Utility Scale Wind Energy and Wind Farm Tour
Wind energy is one of the most positive energy stories in our national economy. New wind projects in the U.S. in 2008 accounted for $17 billion investment and 35,000 new jobs up from 50,000 in 2007 for a total of 85,000 jobs. Learn about San Diego County 's only wind farm with its 50 MW capacity. Then carpool to the wind farm  with expert guidance from the project manager of this site. A brief history of wind energy will also be presented. Meet in the banquet room.
