Cuyamaca College has designated five days preceding the Fall semester and four days preceding the Spring semester as flex days. These two Professional Development Weeks include many learning opportunities and are the major vehicle for faculty participation in Professional Development activities. See Scheduled Activities for details. Faculty are encouraged to present.
Faculty can also earn flex credit by completing Individual Activities.
You may check the status of your hours by logging in to Blackboard. We do send reminders to your WebAdvisor email address when we don't get paperwork, but it is your responsibility to confirm your hours. (Do you need instructions on how to change your WebAdvisor email address?)
The Professional Development Committee sometimes has limited funds to support Professional Development activities (training, conferences, workshops, etc.).
The underlying philosophy of the Professional Development Program at Cuyamaca College is lifelong education. We believe that adults learn best when education is relevant, participatory and applied. We adhere to the principle that we are all "lifelong learners." The college vision, values and goals, and specific policies and procedures provide the overall guidelines and direction for Professional Development, but there is room for individual flexibility. You are the expert regarding your own Professional Development needs, and your active participation in the planning and implementation of Professional Development is important.
The purpose of professional development is to educate and improve the entire staff. AB1725 funds Professional Development activities in California community colleges. The Flexible (Flex) Calendar allows community colleges to set aside 1-15 days of the state-mandated teaching year (175 days) for Professional Development purposes. This time is to be used primarily by faculty for Professional Development activities related to staff, student and instructional improvement (Title 5, section 55720).
The authorized uses of Professional Development funds as outlined in AB1725 by the State Chancellor’s Office are:
