Getting StartedCamtasia Relay allows any faculty or staff member at Cuyamaca College to easily create video recordings that captures their computer screen while recording their voice. This program can be accessed from anywhere, including the classroom, office, or at home. You can have it installed on every computer you use without limitation.
There are two parts to Camtasia Relay: the Camtasia Relay website and the recorder. On the website you can manage your videos and do closed captioning. The "recorder" records your videos then sends them up to our Camtasia Relay server for processing. When finished processing, your video will be published to the Cuyamaca College media server or YouTube depending on the output profile you select.
Camtasia Relay makes creating captions for hearing-impaired students an integral part of the production process and can be used to caption existing video as well. This captioning ability is provided to help ensure that all instructional media used at Cuyamaca College meets ADA requirements for accessibility as required by state and federal law.
This service is available to any Cuyamaca College employee at no charge. Just send an email using your campus email address to firstname.lastname@example.org and request an account. Campus email addresses must be used for communications with Camtasia Relay.
Basic Steps for Using Camtasia Relay
Download Recorder to Your Computer
- Access the Camtasia Relay website at https://camtasia.cuyamaca.edu/
- Login using the username and password you've been given
- Download the Recorder to your computer
- Open the Camtasia Relay Recorder using the icon on your desktop
- Login to the recorder using your username and password
- Make sure you can see green bars moving in the Audio Input Level area when you speak
- Choose a Profile
- Give your video a Title (don't make it too long)
- Click the Record button to start recording
- When done recording, click Stop
- Click Submit to send your video to the server
- If you chose the CC Media Server profile, you will receive an email with the subject, "Action Required: A presentation has been held for caption editing"
- Login to the Camtasia Relay website to edit captions
- Save and publish
- If you use the YouTube profile, use YouTube's captioning tools to caption your video
Get Link to Video
- Receive "Presentation is Ready" automated Camtasia Relay email with link your video
- Click the link to go to the presentation (do not copy link from Outlook!)
- Copy link and add as a web link in Blackboard
Set Up YouTube
If you haven't already done so, you will need to create your own Google (Google owns YouTube) account. I would suggest that you use a different account for teaching than you use for personal videos. You can create a new Google account at https://accounts.google.com/SignUp.
You will also need to verify your YouTube account in order to upload videos longer than 15 minutes. Instructions for how to do this are at https://support.google.com/utube/answer/71673?hl=en.
Once your account is set up in Google/YouTube, log into the camtasia.cuyamaca.edu website and you'll see a prompt under "Actions Necessary" on Home > Dashboard that looks like this:
Click the YouTube link and enter your Google/YouTube account username and password. For Privacy, choose Unlisted. This will set videos so that only those with a link will be able to find or view them.

When do you need to caption?
According to the CCC Distance Education Accessibility Guidelines:
"Per Section 508 guidelines, video files should always be captioned whenever possible, and in most situations they MUST be captioned. Generally speaking, if the video has audio and it will be stored for later or repeated use in a course, it must be captioned. It does not matter if the video is instructor or institution owned, or if it is a collection of clips and snippets; whatever video will be shown in a classroom, placed on a public website, or used in any open forum, needs to be captioned.
In order to use non-captioned video, the video must be contained in a secure, password-protected environment, there must be no students requiring captioning, and the video can only be used for a single term. Other exclusions to captioning include student work and raw footage that will never be archived after the current use, as well as video with foreign language subtitles."
