Lakeside,
Calif.— Local
early season meet saw
San Diego
schools kicking off the season at
Lindo
Lake Park
in
Lakeside, CA. Three Pacific Coast Athletic Conference
schools, Cuyamaca,
San Diego
City and Grossmont were
joined by San Diego Christian of the NAIA as
both men and women ran a 5k course during a
hot and dry morning. The course was packed
as the College Meet took place amidst a 3
division 34 school 1500 runner high school
invite.
First up were the women, Miriam Cardenas
from NAIA, San Diego Christian took the lead
from the beginning, with a pack of Cuyamaca
women running 5th runner.
Cuyamaca’s pack stayed that way through 2
miles when 1st year
coach, Anthony Garcia, let them race the
last mile, and race they did, with Paige
Hughes running under 5:50 for her last mile
to pass Miriam with just 100 meters to go to
finish up in 22:02. Grossmont College
Arriana Runningwolf and Biviana Romero both
were able to break up the Coyotes pack and
place 6th and
7th respectively. But San Diego City responded with their top 7 all
edging out Grossmont’s third runner.
The Men’s race saw two teams toe the line
for the 5,000m race with additional
unattached athletes adding to the mix.
Cuyamaca and San Diego Christian (NAIA) both
had full teams competing today. The
lead pack of 5 went through the first mile
in 5:04 with former Southwestern standout
and currently attending Imperial Valley
College (IVC), Leo Banales leading the way.
For the college athletes, it was Emmanual
Corvera (Cuyamaca) with Lee McAllister (Cuyamaca)
right on his heels. The pack spread
out as the race progressed with Greg Ponce,
another unattached athlete, also attending
IVC taking the win in the last few hundred
meters. Emmanuel finished up in 16:48
to lead Cuyamaca to their 2nd consecutive
victory at the Cuyamaca Invite.
Cuyamaca will compete next at the Palomar
Invitational Friday, September 7.
